Science Fair Project Guidelines

We are excited to welcome homeschool students of all ages to participate in this year’s Ohio Homeschool Science Fair! Please review the following guidelines carefully to ensure your child’s project is prepared properly for judging.

Project Entry Options

  • Projects may be completed as:

    • Individual projects

    • Family projects (siblings working together)

  • Projects may be entered in any category listed on the official Google Form at the time of registration.

What Students Must Bring

Each participant (or family team) must bring:

1. A Display Item

This may include:

  • A working model

  • A demonstration item

  • A sampling of the project

  • A visual model or experiment setup

The display should clearly represent the student’s work and research.

2. A Poster or 3-Sided Standing Project Board

Each project must include either:

  • A poster board
    OR

  • A tri-fold (3-sided) standing science fair board

The board or poster must include:

  • The Title of the Project

  • The Student’s Name

  • The Student’s Age

  • Photos of the student(s) working on the project and/or

  • Facts, research, experiment data, observations, or conclusions related to the project

Students are encouraged to clearly explain:

  • What they studied

  • How they completed the project

  • What they learned

Judging Process

Each presenter will participate in a brief approximately 3-minute interview with a judge.

During the interview, judges will evaluate:

  • The student’s knowledge and understanding of their project

  • The quality and organization of their poster or board

  • The effort and completeness of their display/model/sample

  • The student’s ability to clearly explain their work

Parent Involvement Guidelines

Adult supervision and guidance are expected and welcomed. However:

  • Judges will also consider how evident it is that the child (or children) completed the majority of the work themselves.

  • Projects should reflect the student’s effort, understanding, and creativity.

We want to celebrate student learning, growth, and hands-on engagement.

Awards & Recognition

At the conclusion of judging:

  • Every project will receive a ribbon grading of:

    • 1

    • 2

    • 3

Ribbons will be placed directly on the project board or poster during the end-of-day awards presentation.

Age Division Awards

In addition to ribbon grading:

  • An Overall 1st Place

  • An Overall 2nd Place
